U.S. Commerce Department Awards $400 Million to GlobalWafers
The U.S. Commerce Department is set to grant Taiwan's GlobalWafers up to $400 million to boost silicon wafer production in Texas and Missouri. This investment supports $4 billion in new facilities, creating jobs and bolstering America's semiconductor supply chain amid global production concerns.
The U.S. Commerce Department announced on Wednesday its plans to award up to $400 million in grants to Taiwan's GlobalWafers. The funding aims to significantly enhance production of silicon wafers in the United States.
These grants will fund projects in Texas and Missouri to establish the first U.S. production of 300-mm wafers for advanced semiconductors and expand production of silicon-on-insulator wafers. The effort is part of the Biden administration's strategy to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain.
The planned subsidy will facilitate $4 billion in investments by GlobalWafers to construct new manufacturing facilities, creating 1,700 construction jobs and 880 manufacturing jobs. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo emphasized that GlobalWafers will play a critical role in bolstering America's semiconductor supply chain by providing a domestic source of silicon wafers.
