The Punjab Agriculture department has initiated a proactive approach to safeguard cotton crops by forming 128 pest surveillance teams. This effort, confirmed by state agriculture minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, aims to avert potential insect attacks.

The surveillance teams are operational in key cotton-growing districts including Sri Muktsar Sahib, Fazilka, and Bathinda, inspecting fields and guiding farmers when necessary. For instance, inspections in Fazilka identified active spots of pink bollworm and whitefly, prompting immediate measures.

To further support these efforts, the department is organizing awareness camps across 989 villages, educating farmers on effective pest management and best cultivation practices. The initiative also includes demonstrations covering 60,000 hectares, under the crop diversification plan, with incentives for farmers adhering to recommended practices.
