The Maharashtra government will hand over 4.39 acres to the Bombay High Court by September 10 for a new building, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices BR Gavai and JB Pardiwala were informed on Monday.

On July 8, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court met with the Judges Committee. Another meeting with stakeholders took place on July 9. The government provided a timeline for handing over an additional 30.46 acres to the High Court. The Supreme Court has listed the matter for a further hearing on August 22.

The Supreme Court is hearing a petition, initiated by itself, concerning the need for proper accommodation for the Bombay High Court. The case, titled 'Heritage Building of the Bombay High Court and Allotment of Additional Lands for the High Court,' began in May. President of the Bombay Bar Association Nitin Thakker and other bar leaders have expressed concerns over the issue.

The existing Bombay High Court building is approximately 150 years old. On October 3, 2022, the High Court approved Maharashtra's proposal to allocate lands at Bandra (East), Mumbai.
