Amine master Katsuhiro Otomo has announced that he will be making a series version of his cult classic animated feature "Anime". Otomo created the original "Akira" manga in 1982 which was published in the Weekly Young magazine from 1982 to 1990. However, it was the 1988 cyberpunk film that revolutionised the animation industry around the world.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Otomo, 65, shared the news during a panel discussion at the Anime Expo here. He said the series will not be a reboot of the original but a continuation of the world that began in the 1980s. The series will be produced by Bandai Namco's Sunrise.

Otomo will also be directing a new animated feature, titled "Orbital Era". The project will be his third directorial after "Akira" and 2004's "Steamboy". He will write the original concept and screenplay, as well as the design.

Set in the near future on a space colony under construction, the film is described as an action-adventure story, according to the official logline shared by Sunrise on Facebook. The story follows the "lives of some young boys surviving in this peculiar environment and society as they are tossed around by fate. The reality found in mankind's future will be depicted through their perspective."
