BJP leader Raghuraj Singh has caused a stir with his controversial suggestion that Muslim men should cover themselves with tarpaulins to avoid Holi colors while attending prayers. This year's festival coincides with a Friday during Ramzan, leading to intensified discussions on religious observance and cultural practices.
Singh, granted Minister of State status in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, contended against restricting Holi celebrations near mosques, arguing that devotees of Sanatan Dharma observe the festival only once a year. His remarks follow similar contentious comments by a police officer in Sambhal, sanctioned by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
In anticipation of the festival, many mosques in the region have adjusted Friday prayer timings. The issue of religious tolerance has further been highlighted by a local BJP leader's proposal for a Ram temple on the AMU campus, underscored by Singh's vocal support and commitment to financially back the initiative.
