Shyam Benegal's iconic 1976 film 'Manthan' has been chosen for screening at the prestigious Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. This notable selection is part of the 'Emotion in Colour: A Kaleidoscope of Indian Cinema' series, featuring 12 iconic Indian films.
The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the organization behind the Amul brand, revealed this development, marking a significant recognition of the film's impact on India's dairy industry. Originally produced by half a million dairy farmers, 'Manthan' highlights the pioneering milk cooperative movement led by Dr. Verghese Kurien.
The Film Heritage Foundation, a dedicated preservation group, assisted in restoring the film in 4K. This restoration led to its red-carpet premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, making 'Manthan' the sole Indian film in the Cannes Classics section. The film continues to inspire farmers, underlining India's leading role as the world's largest milk producer.
