The Sea Glass Bridge project, a significant development linking the Vivekananda Rock Memorial with the Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanyakumari, faced delays due to the pandemic and a change in government. Originally sanctioned during the AIADMK regime, the project was a result of efforts by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the former Chief Minister, who secured environment clearance and initiated the construction process as part of the Sagarmala project with financial backing from both central and state governments.

Palaniswami, in statements to the press, emphasized the groundwork laid during his tenure, including necessary approvals and project planning. He highlighted that the proposal for the bridge, aimed at enhancing tourism, was brought forth after deliberations with then Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari in 2018. Despite initial progress, the COVID-19 pandemic stalled work until the current regime, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, completed the project.

The completed 77-meter-long, 10-meter-wide bowstring arch bridge was opened to the public with much fanfare, touted as the first glass bridge of its kind in India. This new infrastructure offers breathtaking views and a unique experience for visitors, standing as a testament to modern engineering amidst the scenic backdrop of Kanyakumari.
