West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday expressed profound grief over the demise of esteemed economist Bibek Debroy, describing him as a 'brilliant son of Bengal and a scholar of repute.'
Debroy, who served as the chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, passed away in New Delhi. Banerjee conveyed her sorrow in a post on X, stating, 'Saddened by the news of the sudden demise of Bibek Debroy, noted economist and Chairman of PM's Economic Advisory Council.'
Debroy, a 69-year-old alumnus of Ramakrishna Mission School and Presidency College in Kolkata, was honored with the Padma Shri award in 2015. Banerjee offered her condolences to Debroy's bereaved family and friends.
