Maha Ashtami, traditionally a day of reverence during Durga Puja, took on a somber tone as protests erupted across Kolkata. The demonstrations were sparked by anger over the rape and murder of a doctor two months prior, casting a shadow over the celebrations.
Despite the initial subdued atmosphere, crowds gradually filled the streets, visiting elaborately decorated pandals. Notably, several popular locations, like College Square and Bagbazar, saw large gatherings, though many community activities were put on hold in a show of solidarity with protesting doctors.
Agitating junior doctors, demanding justice, led a significant rally and continued their hunger strike, urging for systemic changes and heightened security in medical facilities. Their protest demands included the removal of Health Secretary NS Nigam and better protection measures in hospitals.
