Legendary industrialist Ratan Tata, credited with elevating Tata Group to global prominence, passed away at the age of 86 at Breach Candy Hospital. His body was transported from his Colaba residence to the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in South Mumbai for a public tribute.
As news of his passing spread, a stream of dignitaries and admirers, including cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, gathered to pay homage. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that Tata would receive a state funeral, and the Maharashtra government declared a day of mourning in his honor.
Ratan Tata's last respects are being held at the NCPA, with final rites scheduled for later in the day in the Worli area of Mumbai. The national tricolor will be flown at half-mast across government buildings in Maharashtra as a mark of respect.
