Kiran Rao's 'Laapataa Ladies' has been selected as India's official entry for the Oscars 2025, the Film Federation of India announced on Monday.

The Hindi film, a satire on patriarchy, was chosen from a pool of 29 films, including notable entries like 'Animal' and 'All We Imagine As Light.'

Headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, the 13-member committee unanimously selected 'Laapataa Ladies' for the best international film category at the Academy Awards. Other top contenders included 'Srikanth,' 'Vaazhai,' 'Thangalaan,' and 'Ullozhukku.'

Released in March to critical acclaim, 'Laapataa Ladies' tells the story of two brides who get swapped during a train journey in rural India in 2001. The film is produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Productions, and Jio Studios.

The film's director, Kiran Rao, expressed her deep honor and delight over the selection, stating that cinema has the power to connect hearts and ignite meaningful conversations. She hopes the film will resonate with global audiences.

Rao also acknowledged the other contenders and expressed gratitude to the selection committee and everyone who supported the film.

After a 13-year hiatus, Rao made her directorial return with 'Laapataa Ladies,' following her debut film 'Dhobi Ghat' in 2010.

'Laapataa Ladies' stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav, and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023.

Despite India's rich film history, no Indian entry has been nominated for best international feature film at the Oscars since 'Lagaan' in 2002. Other notable films in the running this year included 'Maharaja,' 'Kalki 2898 AD,' and 'Article 370.'
