A clash between two groups wanting to immerse their respective Ganesh idols first led to stone-pelting in Maharashtra's Thane district, necessitating police intervention early Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred around 12:30 am in Bhiwandi, according to Joint Commissioner of Police Dnyaneshwar Chavan.

"With a large crowd gathered at Vanzarpatti Naka amid the clash, we deployed police officials to diffuse the tension and maintain law and order," Chavan said.

Videos of the confrontation, showing stone-pelting and the police response, have surfaced on social media. The fight broke out between two mandals (community groups) wanting to immerse their Ganesh idol first. Police have detained several individuals and are registering cases, according to the official.

While a few policemen and participants were injured, details about the extent of their injuries are still being compiled. Additional police units, including personnel from the State Reserve Police, have been deployed to maintain peace, he added.
