Two private bank employees have died after their sports utility vehicle got trapped in the flooded Old Faridabad Railway underpass, the police reported on Saturday.

The incident occurred late Friday night as the victims, Punyashray Sharma (48) and Viraj (26), were returning home to Greater Faridabad from Gurugram. Heavy rainfall throughout the day had left the underpass inundated, prompting warnings against entering it.

Despite the warnings, an XUV 700 entered the underpass around 11:50 pm and got stuck in the deep floodwater, causing water to rush into the vehicle. Passers-by attempted to rescue the duo and eventually managed to get them out. However, Viraj died immediately on the spot, while Sharma was later pronounced dead at the Badshah Khan Civil Hospital.

Inspector Samer Singh, SHO of the NIT Faridabad police station, confirmed that their families have been informed and said the bodies would be handed over after post-mortem examinations.
