On Friday, Cambodia publicly condemned new US sanctions imposed on Ly Yong Phat, a leading business figure and senator, over claims involving forced labour, human trafficking, and lucrative online scams.
The Cambodian foreign ministry expressed 'deep regret over the unjust decision,' warning that such actions could jeopardize bilateral ties. Ly Yong Phat, one of Cambodia's wealthiest individuals, is heavily involved in the ruling Cambodian People's Party of Prime Minister Hun Manet.
The US Treasury Department announced on Thursday that Ly Yong Phat and five of his enterprises were sanctioned for serious human rights violations linked to online investment scams employing forced labour. This reflects increasing US concerns about cybercrime emanating from Southeast Asia, particularly Cambodia.
