More than 2,500 Ganesh idols were immersed in Mumbai by Wednesday evening, marking the fifth day of the festival dedicated to the elephant-headed deity, according to civic officials.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that of the 2,574 idols immersed in the sea and artificial ponds across the city by 6 pm, 2,533 were from households, and 16 belonged to 'sarvajanik mandals' (community groups).

The 10-day Ganpati festival sees devotees bid emotional farewells to their beloved deity's idols at intervals of one-and-a-half days, five days, and seven days.

Notably, 1,092 Ganesh idols, including 1,081 household ones, were immersed in artificial ponds set up to prevent pollution of natural water bodies. Eight sarvajanik Ganesh idols also met the same fate in these artificial ponds.

"No untoward incidents were reported during the immersions," confirmed the BMC.

Ganeshotsav, which began with Ganesh Chaturthi on September 7, is one of Mumbai's and Maharashtra's most significant festivals, concluding with Anant Chaturdashi on September 17 this year.
