Actor Ritabhari Chakraborty met with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to follow up on her previous request for a committee to investigate sexual abuse allegations within the Bengali film industry. The meeting, inspired by the Hema Committee in Malayalam cinema, comes during ongoing street protests over the murder of a woman doctor at R G Kar Hospital.
In an Instagram update, Chakraborty shared that Chief Minister Banerjee listened to the issues troubling women in the Bengali film sector and responded positively to the request for a neutral body. The actor emphasized her non-political stance and the need for an unbiased committee chaired by a retired justice and including professionals like doctors and lawyers.
Chakraborty reiterated that while forming this committee is crucial, it doesn't overshadow other critical issues, such as the R G Kar case. She previously highlighted the necessity of such a committee to dismantle exploitation systems in Bengali cinema, drawing parallels to the impact of the Hema Committee's findings in Malayalam cinema.
