A Ganpati festival decoration in Kalina, Mumbai, themed around violence against women, is garnering substantial attention. This artistic endeavor was inspired by the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The incident triggered national outrage and led to a series of strikes by doctors and protests by citizens' groups demanding justice. ''The Kolkata horror and other incidents have heightened concerns about women's safety. So, I chose this theme for this year's decoration,'' said Shubham Vanmala, the creator.

Vanmala, a security in-charge in a private airline, has been making themed decorations since 2018, including those on the 9/11 attacks and COVID-19 hospitals. His current work features posters on crimes against women, cardboard models of the Supreme Court and the RG Kar facility, and a statue of the Lady of Justice. Visitors have been flocking to see the thought-provoking installation since the festival began on September 7.
