Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes, who brought bossa nova to international audiences in the 1960s, died on Friday at the age of 83 in Los Angeles, his family confirmed.

According to a statement posted on his website, Mendes, who was suffering from the effects of long Covid, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children.

One of Brazil's most internationally successful artists, Mendes recorded more than 35 albums, with many going gold or platinum. He was a three-time Grammy Award winner and an Oscar nominee. His last performance was in November 2023 to sold-out, enthusiastic audiences in Paris, London, and Barcelona.

Mendes leaves behind an incredible musical legacy, particularly from his band Brasil '66. American musician Herb Alpert, who played a significant role in launching Mendes's international career, said on Instagram that Mendes was 'an extremely gifted musician who brought Brazilian music to the world with elegance and joy.'
