Pernod Ricard Cancels PSG Sponsorship Amid Backlash
Pernod Ricard, a leading French beverage company, has withdrawn plans to sponsor PSG after backlash from fans who associated the brand with rival club Marseille. CEO Alexandre Ricard emphasized the company's historical ties to Marseille, leading to the decision to cancel the partnership.
French drinks and spirits company Pernod Ricard announced on Thursday that it would abandon plans to sponsor Paris St Germain (PSG), the country's reigning soccer champions, following a wave of criticism from fans. Supporters argued that the brand was closely tied to PSG's rivals, Marseille.
Pernod Ricard, one of the world's leading beverage producers, has a deep-rooted history with Marseille, owing its success to Pastis de Marseille. CEO Alexandre Ricard stated, "For more than 90 years, Ricard's history has been intertwined with Marseille, where it was born, grew up and was inspired. And this link is stronger than anything else," in a statement that announced the decision.
The announcement of the sponsorship deal, which aimed to make Pernod Ricard a worldwide official partner and the sole champagne and spirits provider for PSG, had sparked significant debate in French media and among soccer fans. Marseille remains the only French club to have won the Champions League, claiming the title in 1993 by defeating AC Milan in the final.
