Thousands congregated in Ngaruawahia on Thursday to pay their last respects to the late Maori king, Tuheitia Potatau Te Wherowhero VII, who passed away six days prior, and to witness his daughter, Nga wai hono i te po, ascend to the throne. The 27-year-old new queen is only the second woman to occupy this position in a lineage that dates back to 1858.
The emotional ceremony at Turangawaewae marae saw Nga wai hono i te po warmly greeted by thousands, as she honored her father's memory with a traditional canoe procession along the Waikato River, accompanied by Maori warriors leading Kingi Tuheitia to his final resting place.
The week-long tangihanga for Kingi Tuheitia, who recently galvanized New Zealand's Indigenous communities amid rising political divides, culminated in his interment on the sacred Taupiri Mountain. His daughter's ascension underscores the rise of a new generation deeply rooted in a revitalized Maori language and culture, representing hope and unity for the future.
