Siya Kolisi's Availability in Doubt for Crucial Test Against New Zealand
South Africa is monitoring captain Siya Kolisi's recovery from a cheek injury as they prepare for the second Rugby Championship test against New Zealand. Kolisi's leadership and performance are vital to the team. While his participation remains uncertain, South Africa's depth offers reassurance. A win could secure their first championship since 2019.
South Africa will assess captain Siya Kolisi's fitness throughout the week, not ruling him out for the crucial second Rugby Championship test against New Zealand in Cape Town on Saturday, following a delay in their team announcement by two days.
Kolisi sustained a cheek injury after an upright tackle from New Zealand flanker Sam Cane during the Springboks' victory over the All Blacks in Johannesburg last weekend. His leadership and powerful performance are key to South Africa's play.
'Our medical team is still assessing the injuries and will decide during the week whether he will be available for selection,' Springbok scrum coach Daan Human stated on Monday. 'We are announcing the team on Thursday, so we'll see how he progresses. He's an important player for us, and hopefully, he can recover well. If not, the next player will step in.' South Africa, aiming to secure their first Rugby Championship since 2019, lead the table with 14 points, followed by New Zealand with six. Human expects an improved performance would be necessary to secure a fourth consecutive win against a formidable All Blacks side.
'We've had our review and believe there's much to improve on. New Zealand is a high-quality team, and realistic expectations are crucial,' Human added.
