The Opposition BJD on Wednesday urged the Assembly to pass a resolution supporting the continuation of the UNESCO Kalinga Prize, an emblem of Odia pride. The issue was introduced during Zero Hour by BJD members Goutam Buddha Das and Kalikesh Singh Deo, who emphasized Odisha's global recognition through the award.

Expressing concern over the Centre's withdrawal of support, Das highlighted its uniqueness as the only international prize named after an Indian state. 'The UNESCO Kalinga Prize is a unique honour for Odisha, and its discontinuation would be a loss,' Das stated.

BJD president Naveen Patnaik previously wrote to Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh on August 12, urging continued support. Patnaik underscored that the prize has become a symbol of Odia identity and a cherished legacy. Established in 1952 by Odisha's former CM Biju Patnaik, the prize has been awarded to 72 scientists, including seven Nobel laureates.
