One person has died and several others are missing following heavy rainfall that severely damaged houses and parts of National Highway-29 in Nagaland's Chumoukedima district, officials reported on Wednesday.

The flashfloods occurred Tuesday night, wrecking roadside houses in Pherima and completely washing away a portion of NH-29, which connects state capital Kohima with the commercial hub Dimapur, officials said.

The district administration is actively assessing the situation, and search efforts are underway to locate the missing individuals.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed his concern and revealed that the state government is in discussion with the Centre for urgent relief and rescue efforts.

Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister T R Zeliang expressed his sorrow over the incident and emphasized the urgency of ongoing search and rescue operations.
