The Maharashtra government has given the green light to extend the prison department's community radio initiative across all state jails, an official announced on Monday. This initiative has shown promising results in altering the mentalities of inmates for the better.

Originally launched in Nagpur, Yerwada, Nashik, and Kolhapur Central jails, the community radio project aims to mentally reform inmates and discourage criminal behavior. Seeing its success, the prison department requested permission from the home department to roll it out to other jails.

A government resolution was issued on Monday to implement the program in Maharashtra's nine central prisons, 31 district prisons, 19 open prisons, and 172 secondary prisons. The initiative will provide inmates with information, counseling, and entertainment. Remarkably, radio jockeys for the program will be chosen from within the prison population itself.
