Remembering the Mussoorie Martyrs: A Tribute to Uttarakhand's Statehood Heroes

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday paid tribute to the statehood agitators killed in the Mussoorie firing incident on its 30th anniversary. He stated that Uttarakhand's statehood was achieved through their 'supreme sacrifice'.

Six statehood agitators died on September 2, 1994, when police opened fire on them while they were protesting against an earlier police action in Khatima that left seven dead. Dhami individually named the martyrs, including Belmati Chauhan and Hansa Dhanai, and described the incident as a 'brutal act' by the undivided Uttar Pradesh government to suppress a peaceful movement. The ruling party at that time was the Samajwadi Party.

Dhami highlighted steps the state government is taking to honor their vision. Measures include a 10% horizontal reservation in government jobs for identified agitators or their dependents, a 30% reservation for domiciled women, and the introduction of the country's strictest anti-cheating law to protect meritorious students' futures.
