Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (retd) K T Parnaik stressed on Sunday the urgent need for policy and institutional backing to conserve the state's declining Mithun population. Speaking at the second edition of 'Mithun Day' and the national seminar on 'Integrated Mithun Farming for Enhancing Farmers' Income in NE,' Parnaik highlighted the lack of adequate support for the state animal.

Parnaik proposed developing a 'special land use policy' and setting up Mithun conservation areas. He also suggested that community Mithun rearing centres be established to cater to clusters of 2-3 villages and recommended discussions with experts to initiate a pilot project focusing on best practices for Mithun farming.

Noting that Arunachal Pradesh hosts 89% of the global Mithun population, Parnaik praised local farmers and underscored the animal's cultural significance. He also called for forming cooperatives for Mithun milk and its products, and establishing modern tanneries. Further, he urged for a technically sound breeding policy and research centres to unlock the animal's potential in milk, meat, and draft power.
