Kolkata is bracing for a wave of rallies and demonstrations on Thursday following the alleged rape and murder of a doctor. Political parties and civil society organizations are set to take to the streets, demanding justice.
Despite police efforts to thwart their plans, the BJP is determined to proceed with its protest in the Esplanade area, as confirmed by Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar. The party is calling for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly diverting the probe and shielding the main perpetrators.
Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya criticized Kolkata Police for not allowing the party to set up a stage for their planned dharna, despite a Calcutta High Court order. Meanwhile, Congress leader Adhir Choudhury will lead a rally demanding justice for the deceased doctor. Rights activists and professionals will also join the protests, highlighting atrocities against women.
