In light of the recent liquor-related fatalities in Ganjam district, Odisha Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan has announced that the state government is mulling a blanket ban on dance bars.

During a discussion in the Assembly on the Ganjam liquor deaths, Harichandan addressed reporters, emphasizing that such establishments are contrary to Odia 'Asmita' (cultural pride). The minister's declaration comes after appeals from former dance bar workers in Bhubaneswar, urging the government to reissue permits for licensed liquor shops to host dance performances. The current BJP government had previously criticised the former BJD administration for compromising Odia culture by allowing dance bars in Bhubaneswar.

In addition, Harichandan detailed the forthcoming excise policy, aimed at protecting Odia cultural values. Among the proposed measures are the prohibition of liquor shops near religious institutions and educational facilities, as well as the demolition of illegal liquor outlets permitted by prior regimes. Supporting this stance, Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati argued that shutting down dance bars is crucial for safeguarding the youth, also stressing the need to relocate liquor shops from sensitive areas.
