Renowned actors and filmmakers from the Bengali cinema industry convened to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident, which took place on August 9, has ignited widespread outrage, with numerous sectors taking action.

Prominent personalities such as directors Arindam Sil and Kaushik Ganguly, as well as actress Churni Ganguly, were among those who gathered to demand justice for the victim. Bengali actor Saheb Chatterjee also joined the protests, stressing the urgency for appropriate justice and effective responses to such violent acts to prevent eroding public trust.

"Expressing our anger through protest and demanding justice is the best way forward," Chatterjee stated, adding, "Protest remains a vital democratic tool to ensure authorities address critical issues." The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is utilizing advanced techniques, including 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward where the crime occurred, to progress in the investigation.

Additionally, the CBI has performed psychological assessments on the primary suspect, with a psychologist from the CBI team arriving in Kolkata on Saturday to aid the probe. The Supreme Court of India, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, is set to hear the case on August 20. The case has spurred extensive public protests beyond the medical community.

Football fans protested near Salt Lake Stadium, causing the cancellation of the Durand Cup match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. Concurrently, junior doctors and students continue their protests at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, pressing for justice and accountability.

The unrest has escalated, leading to incidents of vandalism, including an attack on the protest site and hospital campus on August 14. In response, Kolkata police have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, around the medical college for seven days starting August 18. (ANI)
