Historic National Flag of 1947: Preserved Glory at Chennai's St. George Museum

As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, there's an opportunity to reflect on significant historical moments. The national flag, first hoisted on August 15, 1947, at 5:30 am at Fort St. George, has been scientifically preserved and is on display at the St. George Museum in Chennai. This iconic flag is a major attraction for both locals and foreigners.

Opened to the public on January 31, 1948, the Chennai St. George Fort Museum houses this historically significant flag. Conserved by the Archaeological Survey of India, the flag has been on public display since January 26, 2013. It is encased in an airtight wooden-glass showcase, surrounded by six bowls of silica gel to regulate humidity.

The 12ft by 8ft pure silk flag, hoisted after lowering the British Union Jack on August 15, 1947, was witnessed by thousands. It remains the sole national flag preserved from that era. Alongside the flag, the museum features galleries with artifacts such as Madras Army uniforms, weaponry, and other items used by the British and Madras Army.

Visitors from around the world, like an Italian tourist, appreciate the museum and the well-preserved flag. "I came here to see the museum. It's lovely, especially the flag. Tomorrow is Independence Day, and it's wonderful to see how well it is preserved," she shared. (ANI)
