Congress leaders on Thursday condoled the passing away of former West Bengal chief minister and veteran CPI (M) leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, with Rahul Gandhi emphasizing his enduring contributions to both state and nation.

Bhattacharjee, known for his industrial initiatives in West Bengal, passed away at his Kolkata residence due to age-related ailments. He was 80 and is survived by his wife Mira and daughter Suchetana, who had undergone gender change surgery.

In a heartfelt post on X, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge conveyed, "My deepest condolences on the passing away of Former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. He served the people in a political career that spanned more than five decades. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and comrades."

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, expressed his sorrow, noting Bhattacharjee's unwavering dedication to public service. "His contributions to the state and nation will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and followers during this difficult time," Gandhi said.

Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh characterized Bhattacharjee as an unrepentant communist deeply rooted in secular values, also highlighting his love for literature and the arts. Ramesh noted that Bhattacharjee had previously declined the Padma Bhushan award, akin to PN Haksar's multiple rejections of the Padma Vibhushan.
