Punjab Government Hails Martyr Udham Singh; Plans Major State Development

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann lauded the heroic legacy of Shaheed Udham Singh on Wednesday, emphasizing the state's historical importance in India's freedom struggle. Addressing a state-level function marking the martyrdom of the revolutionary figure, Mann recounted childhood visits with his father to annual tributes for Udham Singh.

Mann credited the sacrifices of legendary heroes like Shaheed Udham Singh for the freedoms enjoyed by modern-day Indians. He highlighted Singh's act of valor in avenging the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre by killing Michael O' Dwyer, a key perpetrator. Punjabis, Mann declared, hold a prominent place in the national freedom struggle.

The Chief Minister also revealed new initiatives by his government, including the construction of the Malwa canal—a first in post-independence era. Mann stressed that previous administrations ignored such essential projects. Additionally, plans for an ultra-modern stadium and a new bus stand were unveiled. Mann thanked the Punjab athletes heading to the Paris Olympics, noting investments in their preparation and promised cash awards for medal winners.
