British radical Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 28 years for leading a terrorist organisation.

The 57-year-old was convicted last week for directing al-Muhajiroun, a group banned over a decade ago, and encouraging support for it. Judge Mark Wall, speaking at London's Woolwich Crown Court, stated that such organisations normalize violence for ideological causes.

The judge imposed the life sentence, with Choudary required to serve at least 28 years before being eligible for parole, minus the year he has already spent in custody.
