Charli XCX, Ghetts, and The Last Dinner Party Among Mercury Prize Nominees

Singer-songwriter Charli XCX, rapper Ghetts, and indie rock band The Last Dinner Party are among the nominees for this year's Mercury Prize, organisers of the British music award announced on Thursday. More than half of the shortlist comprises debut albums.

First awarded to rockers Primal Scream in 1992, the annual £25,000 ($32,202) prize shortlists 12 albums released in the UK in the past year by British and Irish acts. Unlike Britain's mainstream BRIT Awards, the Mercury Prize covers all music genres.

Charli XCX is nominated for her album "Brat," while Ghetts is in the running for his fourth studio album "On Purpose, with Purpose." The Last Dinner Party received a nod for their debut "Prelude to Ecstasy." Other nominees include debut albums from Nia Archives, Cat Burns, Barry Can't Swim, and Berwyn.

Established artists also feature on the list, such as Beth Gibbons with her first solo album "Lives Outgrown" and Corinne Bailey Rae's "Black Rainbows." The winner will be revealed in September, following last year's victory of Ezra Collective's jazz album "Where I'm Meant to Be."
