Outer Banks, one of Netflix's popular teen dramas in the action-adventure mystery genre, has recently debuted its third season. The season finale has provided a fitting setup for yet another installment. In February 2023, the show was granted a fourth season renewal ahead of the Season 3 premiere.
Understanding the ending of Outer Banks Season 3
In the final episode of Outer Banks Season 3, John B and Sarah, along with Pope and Cleo, fly to Tres Rochas, Mexico, to find El Dorado, the lost city of gold. Sarah's father, Ward, joins them but she later sends him away. Meanwhile, JJ and Kiara also head to Mexico by hitching a ride on a drug plane. They reunite with Pope and Cleo, and together they search for John B's father, who is held captive by Carlos Singh and his men.
The group finds Big John on the street, and they all head to their boat to escape Singh's pursuit. However, they find Ward waiting for them, and despite his past betrayal, they take him with them. After a long hike, they find the gnomon and decipher its clues to locate El Dorado. Singh arrives and demands to know the treasure's location, but Sarah threatens him with a gun. Ward saves them, but Big John gets shot.
John B, Big John, and Sarah enter a series of caves, and Sarah finds a hidden passage. They follow more clues and find a gold mine with large nuggets. Singh arrives and holds them at gunpoint, but Big John sacrifices himself to save his son and destroys the cave. Ward tries to take the gold but is stopped by the Pogues. Singh's guard, Ryan, wants the money and shoots Ward. Ward charges Ryan, and they both fall off a cliff.
The surviving Pogues head back home, but Big John dies from his wound on the boat.
What can we expect from Outer Banks Season 4?
As of now, there's no official plot for Outer Banks Season 4, but there are speculations and hints from the show's creators. The third season ended with a new treasure hunt, and it's expected that the Pogues will embark on another adventure in Season 4.
Creator Jonas Pate previously said that the show could go on for four or five seasons, but now, he and co-creator Josh Pate have hinted that the show could potentially continue for a longer time, even up to 17 seasons. The show's focus could also expand beyond the Bahamas, El Dorado, and the hunt for treasure, with suggestions that the story could venture into outer space. However, it remains to be seen how the story will unfold and how the Pogues will deal with the aftermath of the events of the third season, including the deaths of Ward and Big John.
Now, Josh Pate has said that the show could potentially go on for 17 seasons, saying: "I don't know if I could put a real number on it right now – how long it takes to get to that ending might expand, but we now know the shape of the end of the story. We're going to take it as long as we can, for sure."
Jonas Pate also told: "In season 17, we'll be on Mars" and when compared to Fast & Furious' similar space-themed plotline, Shannon Burke agrees, saying: "We're not opposed. We do try to keep it grounded to some extent. It's that give and take, because sometimes when it gets too big it's not as fun anymore."
How soon can we expect the release of Outer Banks Season 4?
The premiere date of Outer Banks Season 4 has not yet been announced. Given that the most recent season was released in February 2023, fans are hopeful that Season 4 will follow suit and be released in early 2024. The show's previous seasons have been released at different times in the first half of the year, so it's uncertain when exactly we can expect the next installment. However, the fact that Season 4 has already been renewed before the release of Season 3 is a positive sign. We will continue to monitor the series and keep you informed of any updates.
