A disturbing report has unveiled a rampant ragging crisis in Indian universities and colleges, with 51 deaths reported from 2020 to 2024. The 'State of Ragging in India 2022-24' by the Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE) underscores a problem as severe as the student suicides in Kota.
Medical colleges have emerged as major hubs for ragging complaints, accounting for a significant majority of reported cases. Despite the registered 3,156 complaints at the National Anti-Ragging Helpline, the actual figures are believed to be much higher, with many cases going unreported due to fear of retaliation.
The report urges the need for anonymous reporting on the National Anti-Ragging Helpline, formation of dedicated Anti-Ragging Squads, and separate accommodations for freshers. It emphasizes adopting stringent measures to protect students and ensure a safe educational environment.
