A significant multinational rescue mission is ongoing in Lithuania, where four U.S. soldiers have gone missing during a military exercise near the Belarus border. The incident occurred at the Pabrade training ground, where various U.S. units have been rotating since 2019.
The soldiers' M88 Hercules armoured recovery vehicle was found submerged in a peat bog, more than five meters deep. Lithuanian Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene confirmed that sufficient water has been drained to start digging for the vehicle. Hundreds of Lithuanian and U.S. soldiers are involved in the search operation, which includes surveying surrounding areas.
Poland has also joined the effort, sending troops, scuba divers, and equipment to aid the mission. U.S. Ambassador Kara McDonald expressed gratitude for Lithuania's support, calling it exemplary. Lithuania's Foreign Affairs Minister Kestutis Budrys indicated the nation's readiness to host more U.S. troops amidst the ongoing cooperative efforts.
