Tertiary Education and Skills Minister Penny Simmonds has announced the appointment of Dr Alan Bollard CNZM and Mr Bharat Guha to the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) board. These appointments bring a wealth of expertise in governance, financial management, and strategic oversight to the TEC, enhancing its ability to navigate the evolving landscape of New Zealand's tertiary education sector.

Dr. Alan Bollard, a distinguished public sector leader with extensive experience as a board member and chair, brings strong knowledge of government operations, financial oversight, and economic expertise. His career has included high-level roles such as Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, making him well-suited to address the financial and policy complexities of tertiary education.

Mr. Bharat Guha, Chief Financial Officer at the Invercargill Licensing Trust, has deep financial acumen and a strong background in vocational education and training management. With a focus on skills development, Guha’s expertise will contribute to the TEC's mission of creating pathways for workforce-ready graduates and supporting innovative educational programs.

“With such strong governance experience, Dr. Bollard and Mr. Guha will bring new energy and insight to our board,” said Minister Simmonds. “Their combined knowledge of public sector leadership and financial strategy will enhance TEC's capabilities in addressing the pressing needs of New Zealand's tertiary and vocational education sectors.”

Emeritus Professor Alastair MacCormick CNZM, a board member since 2017, has been reappointed for an additional 12-month term, extending his service until October 2025. A former dean and vice-chancellor at the University of Auckland, Professor MacCormick’s leadership and academic expertise have been instrumental in guiding TEC’s strategic initiatives, particularly those related to university-level governance.

“I am grateful for Professor MacCormick’s continued contributions to the TEC board. His knowledge of governance within the university sector and his longstanding commitment to education are invaluable,” Simmonds said.

The Minister also noted that she would address the vacancy for the board’s chair and an upcoming member position later this year. The TEC board, with its new appointments, will play a pivotal role in implementing reforms in tertiary and vocational education, ensuring New Zealand’s education system remains adaptable and responsive to both students' and industries' needs.
