A US Army veteran drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year's revellers in New Orleans, the FBI revealed Thursday. Initially suspected of working with others, the FBI has confirmed that Shamsud-Din Jabbar acted alone in the attack, inspired by the Islamic State group.
Jabbar posted videos proclaiming his support for the militant group hours before the assault, which claimed 14 lives, including his own. The attack, the deadliest IS-inspired assault on US soil in recent years, highlights a renewed international terrorism threat as the US prepares for leadership changes.
The FBI is investigating Jabbar's radicalization process and has ruled out any connections between the New Orleans attack and a Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas. Authorities reviewed surveillance footage but found no evidence of additional accomplices.
