Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab has reignited the decades-old debate over renaming Ravenshaw University. Speaking at a seminar on Friday, Mahtab highlighted the historical grievances linked to Thomas Edward Ravenshaw, under whose commissionership Odisha faced devastating famines between 1865 and 1878. He emphasized that demands for changing the university's name began as early as 1949.

Mahtab pointed out that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had merely suggested a debate on the topic, which led to an avoidable controversy. He questioned why an institution funded by the people of Odisha should bear the name of an Englishman, asking if any institutions outside the state are named after Odia figures.

Mahtab urged the state government to take a firm stand on the issue, expressing that renaming the university should not be problematic given its historical context and the long-standing advocacy for this change.
