On Wednesday, the Opposition Congress criticized the BJP-led Assam government, alleging that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is using the Assam Accord implementation issue to distract from corruption allegations involving his family.
At a joint press conference, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah argued that the state government's move to implement 57 recommendations of the Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee on the Assam Accord is baseless, as only the Centre has the authority to enforce them.
They accused CM Sarma of attempting to mislead Assam voters ahead of the 2026 assembly elections and questioned why no details on implementing the recommendations have been made public, calling for the Centre's Home Ministry to take action instead.
