The Bihar government has given district magistrates (DMs) the authority to close schools in the event of flood-like conditions within their jurisdictions. This move comes on the heels of a tragic incident where a government school teacher fell into the Ganga River and was swept away near Patna.
The teacher, Avinash Kumar, fell into the river at Nasriganj ghat while attempting to take a boat to his school. The Education Department Secretary, Baidya Nath Yadav, stated that DMs can close schools under Disaster Management rules if necessary.
A search operation is currently underway for the missing teacher. Authorities have been instructed to ensure only registered boats are used, and that all passengers wear life jackets in flood-prone areas. Additional life jackets will be provided at key ghats across the state.
