The government is actively engaging with state governments and industry bodies to modernize 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and five National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs), Union Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Jayant Chaudhary announced on Friday.

'We are in continuous dialogues with state governments and industry associations to incorporate their suggestions for upgrading 1,000 ITIs and five NSTIs,' said the minister during a function. 'Of the 15,000 ITIs in India, 12,000 are in the private sector, making their input invaluable for this initiative.'

Maharashtra will play a crucial role in this upgrade, as it hosts 4,100 ITIs, roughly 10% of the national total. 'Skilling should be aspirational to offer children better employment opportunities,' Chaudhary emphasized.

The minister highlighted that skilling is a shared responsibility between the government and the private sector. 'For industries to compete globally, a skilled workforce is essential. We aim to reform these ITIs with a relevant curriculum to train world-class trainers who meet industry needs.'

Speaking at NSTI Mumbai, where multiple MoUs were signed, Chaudhary noted collaborations with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, and the Regional Directorate of Vocational Education and Training, Pune, among others.
