The Centre unveiled a strategic month-wise plan to supply maximum rail rakes to Punjab, aiming to tackle storage constraints and expedite the evacuation of existing rice stocks. This move comes as Punjab grapples with logistical challenges amid its attempt to procure 124 lakh tonnes of rice in the current season.
Punjab currently holds 130 lakh tonnes of rice, and since October 1, approximately 32 lakh tonnes of paddy have been procured. Union Food Minister Prahlad Joshi emphasized that Punjab and Haryana have been prioritized for stock evacuation, addressing concerns about procurement delays.
Minister Joshi reiterated the Centre's steadfast commitment to acquiring 185 lakh tonnes of paddy this season, equivalent to 124 lakh tonnes of rice. This assurance follows a collaborative plan shared with Punjab for space creation, with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressing satisfaction with the solution proposed by the central government.
