Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday initiated the expansion of Bagdogra Airport, a significant aviation hub in northern West Bengal, with a foundation stone-laying ceremony. The expansion, pegged at Rs 1,550 crore, promises to enhance the airport's capacity and infrastructure.
Part of a broader Rs 6,700 crore development initiative, the project's highlights include a new terminal building that spans 70,390 sqm, enabling it to handle 10 million passengers a year, and accommodating 3,000 passengers during peak hours. Additional features include 10 parking bays for A-321 type aircraft.
The environmentally-conscious design will integrate renewable energy sources. The Union Cabinet approved the project in August, supporting the airport's new designation as a point-of-call (PoC) airport, advancing West Bengal's tourism and industry potential.
