Kaohsiung Struggles to Recover Post-Typhoon Krathon

In southern Taiwan, efforts are underway to remedy the devastation left by Typhoon Krathon, which struck Kaohsiung, a major port city, causing extensive damage through flooding and high winds. While much of Taiwan returned to regular activities, Kaohsiung is still grappling with significant challenges.

Local authorities have declared a fourth day of work suspension as they address fallen trees, disrupted roads, and utility issues. The mayor promised swift action to restore transportation, water, and power supplies. At least 2,000 trees blocked roads, and there were limited infrastructure damages, including power outages affecting nearly 100,000 households.

Across Kaohsiung, a city of 2.7 million people, workers removed debris and serviced disrupted transport links. Though routine operations resumed for the north-south high-speed rail and most ordinary rail routes, air travel faced substantial delays. Meanwhile, enquiries are underway regarding a Pingtung hospital fire during the typhoon.
