The shift of major shipping traffic from the Red Sea to the Cape of Good Hope has prompted a resurgence of piracy, according to a senior Italian Navy official. Vice Admiral Aurelio De Carolis, who leads the Italian Fleet, praised the Indian Navy's efforts in the Indian Ocean while speaking to reporters in Vasco, Goa.

De Carolis noted the impact of the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels on Red Sea commerce between Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, leading to the majority of shipping routes being redirected via South Africa. This diversion has, in part, contributed to increased piracy in the region.

The Italian and Indian navies are furthering their collaboration through bilateral exercises off Goa's coast, scheduled for early October. Real Admiral Giancarlo Ciappina emphasized the importance of coordination given the involvement of civilian airspace, highlighting the international nature of these operations.
