Taiwan Mobilizes Troops & Shuts Down Ahead of Typhoon Krathon

Taiwan has mobilized nearly 40,000 troops on standby as Typhoon Krathon approaches its southwest coast, poised to bring a severe storm surge. Rescue efforts are underway, with helicopters evacuating 19 sailors from a sinking ship.

The impending typhoon has led to flight cancellations, rail line closures, and deserted streets in Kaohsiung. The Taipei city government has declared a typhoon holiday for Wednesday, shutting financial markets. Unlike usual typhoons, Krathon will strike Taiwan's flat western plain. The super typhoon is expected to reach Kaohsiung early Wednesday afternoon before moving across Taiwan and into the East China Sea.

Authorities have warned of gusts exceeding 150 kph and potential flooding. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai urged residents to limit outdoor activities, recalling the devastation from Typhoon Thelma in 1977. With 38,000 troops on standby, local fisherman Chen Ming-huang is prepping for the worst, securing his boat in fear of it drifting away. While major chip maker TSMC has activated typhoon protocols, it does not anticipate significant operational disruption.
