The government has stepped up efforts to control onion prices by selling buffer stock in wholesale markets after a recent surge in retail prices due to the removal of export duty.

Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare stated on Monday that the Centre has started releasing onions from its buffer stock in key cities like Delhi and plans to roll out subsidized retail sales across the nation.

She highlighted an increase in kharif sowing and expected good crop arrivals next month, which should help maintain stable onion prices. The government is selling onions at Rs 35 per kg in major cities to manage the price spike.
