A single-engine plane traveling from Iowa to Indiana crashed in a central Indiana cornfield on Friday, claiming the lives of all on board, according to authorities.

The Piper PA-46 aircraft had departed from Fort Dodge, Iowa, at approximately 6:45 am and was scheduled to arrive at Anderson Municipal Airport by 9:55 am. However, the plane crashed near the airport, said Capt. Darwin Dwiggins of the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

Officials reported that the aircraft came in too high on its initial approach and was instructed to reroute for another approach. Witnesses stated the pilot seemed to be attempting to turn back towards the airport before the crash. One witness described the plane flipping over, nosediving into the cornfield, and bursting into flames. The Federal Aviation Administration's preliminary statement confirmed that four people were aboard and there were no survivors.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation and reported the crash occurred under unknown circumstances. An NTSB investigator is expected to document the scene and analyze the wreckage. The Associated Press reached out to the Madison County Coroner's Office for information on the victims.
